How to run a mango drive

Families order trays of mangoes before the day, and collect them from school. Here's how to run one from your phone, step by step.

When
Orders in October and November, collection in late November or early December
Good for
Schools, P&Cs, childcare centres, kindergartens and sports clubs
You'll need
A grower or supplier, a place to collect from, and two or three volunteers on the day

A mango drive is one of the easiest fundraisers to run: families already want mangoes at Christmas, and there's nothing to make. You agree a price per tray with a grower, families order and pay before the day, and the trays arrive at school on one morning for families to collect.

The hard part used to be the money: paper forms, cash envelopes, chasing who paid. Taking orders online fixes that. Everyone pays when they order, and the total trays to order from the grower add up as you go.

Start your mango drive

Free to start. Once you’ve named your group, tap Pre-order with a collection day.

Six to eight weeks before

  • Find a grower or fundraising supplier who delivers to schools. Ask the price per tray, how many mangoes are in a tray, the delivery day, and when they need your final number.
  • Agree the delivery day with your school or club, and where families will collect: the hall, the canteen or a covered spot near the gate.
  • Choose your price per tray: what the grower charges, plus what you want to raise from each one. The sum under What you'll make shows how the fees work out.

Four to five weeks before

After the last day to order

  • Check how many trays you've sold. See See your orders and takings.
  • Send the grower your final number.
  • Line up two or three volunteers for collection day.

The week before

  • Remind families when and where to collect. Your Events tab shows collection day under Coming up: tap Remind buyers and check the message before you send it.
  • Send your volunteers the pickup link. They don't need to sign up. See Run collection day.

On collection day

  • Be there when the trays arrive, and count them against your order before the delivery leaves.
  • Volunteers find each family on the pickup list, hand over the trays and tap Mark collected.
  • Afterwards, remind anyone who hasn't collected, and agree how long you'll hold their trays.

What you’ll make

Say your grower charges $30 a tray and you sell them for $40.

Parents pay exactly $40. Card and our fees come out of each payment, so your group gets $38.52 a tray. After paying the grower, that's $8.52 a tray, or $852 for 100 trays.

At checkout, parents can round up for your group. The smallest round-up covers both fees, so on those trays you keep the full $10.

Your group's first fundraiser is free, so the first time you keep even more. See Pricing.

Good to know

  • Keep the trays in the shade and off hot concrete. Mangoes keep ripening once they arrive, so collection is best on delivery day.
  • Leave a gap of a few days between the last day to order and the grower's deadline, so a late question from a family doesn't hold you up.
  • Ask families to bring a bag or a box if they're carrying trays to the car with small children.
  • Running it again next year? Copy this year's fundraiser in one tap. See Run it again next time.
